Green and White Supporters Club Enjoy another Successful Year - AGM Summary Below
Tuesday 11th December 2007

GREEN & WHITE SUPPORTERS CLUB AGM
29 November 2007

Chairman’s Address

Rich Rendell opened the meeting by welcoming all the members and guests to the meeting.

He thanked Russell and the lads for getting us to Wembley for the play-off final with a fantastic display against Nottingham Forest, a game which many class as the best Yeovil game they’ve ever seen. On the way back the phones started ringing with people wanting to book their seats on the coaches to the final. In all, the GWSC took 96 coaches with over 5,000 supporters on board to Wembley and all had left within 20 minutes! We will never forget that day, but it would appear that 25,000 others have!

ich reminded everyone that the GWSC had been actively supporting the football club again in the form of player, programme and goal sponsorship; purchasing of physio equipment for the team; funding kit and a tour for the youth development scheme; and paying for the infamous pre-season boot-camp.

On a sad note, Rich reflected on the loss of former player Paul Smith who was fantastic for Yeovil and will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

Guest Speaker – Ian Hambridge, Police Liaison Officer

Ian introduced himself to the members and explained to them his role and what it entails. His aim is to liase between the police and the football club to ensure that match days run smoothly for all, whether home or away. He also aims to keep policing requirements to a minimum as officers are better out in the community and it also saves the club money. Ian is constantly in contact with Paul Hadlow (GWSC) reference numbers of supporters, coaches, disabled requirements and to inform of restrictions on visiting supporters at away matches.

He went on to add that YTFC had been recognised by the UK Football Unit as a model club and many other clubs have visited Huish Park to see how things work and how the supporters behave. Also being recognised is the behaviour of our supporters at away matches with Millwall recently commenting, “if only all football supporters were like Yeovil”.

Ian closed his speech by asking supporters not to react to or argue with stewards at away games; no matter how rude or offensive they are as this can reflect badly on Yeovil. If any stewards or officials treat supporters badly, please take their name, ID number, etc. and report it to Paul Hadlow or anyone in the GWSC who will inform Ian, who in turn will ensure it is dealt with through the correct channels.

For more information on the next match from the police, please visit the Avon and Somerset website.

Guest Speaker – Mo Hopkins, Youth Development Officer

Mo introduced himself to those present and explained what the Youth Development Scheme is. It is a scheme for developing the football skills of youngsters aged between 9-16 to bring them through to hopefully, one day, play for Yeovil. The scheme is currently in liaison with the football league to become a Centre of Excellence in the New Year.

Mo then thanked the GWSC for their continued support and for sponsoring kit and the recent tour to Everton, Manchester United, Wigan and Rochdale. The lads competed well on the tour and learned a lot from the experience.

Guest Speaker – John Fry, Chairman, YTFC

John thanked the members for their continued support and spoke of his belief that the GWSC were the heart and soul of the club and that every member of staff should join. In the future he believes there will be need for supporters representation on the Board and that this should come from within the GWSC.

John then went on to describe the plan for stability within the club. We had lost managers and players over the last few seasons and some stability is what is needed if we are to build and progress. As a result, Russell Slade had signed an extension to his contract which would keep him at the club until 2011.

John then touched briefly on possible changes to the club structure including possible ground developments such as training facilities, etc. and the Yeovil Town Community Sports Trust. There are many ties on the current facility that make development almost impossible but the club are working on these. The bar hadn’t been built due to these restrictions and the shared ownership issues which would result in others benefiting more from the bar than the club itself.

He then went on to talk of the many clubs that have financial issues and could fold. Only those in a stable financial position are looking likely to survive the current trends. Here at Yeovil we do the best we can with what we have. We may scrounge here and there and seek help from others such as GWSC but we are achieving. We have to regulate the business, especially with the falling gates. By development of stadium, training pitches, youth development, first team, etc. the club hope to build and get the required gates of 12k to survive at this level. We have had 5 years in the black but things may be difficult this year.

John concluded his speech by thanking the GWSC for what they do and for letting him travel with us.

Business Report

Gayle Franklin reported that the business had once again been successful over the past year. The GWSC had entered into professional contracts again with YTFC for the sale of match day programmes and provision of stadium assistants to assist disabled supporters and those new to Huish Park. She thanked Darran Jones and Douglas Ireland for taking on the responsibility of allocating bays and permits to disabled supporters following the resignation of Hazel from the DSA.

Gayle also informed the members of the new GWSC website that should be up and running by Christmas. She thanked Ali King for all his efforts with the existing site, but the time had come to move on. The new site will have a new address, www.greenandwhites.co.uk, but the existing address will still be operational until October 2008 and will be directed to the new site.

Paul Hadlow reported on another successful year for travel and merchandise. Once again the GWSC had run coaches to every away game last season including a magnificent 96 to Wembley. Paul thanked all those who helped on the day and gave special thanks to Roy, Zoe and Cyril, who gave up many hours taking bookings and payments. All the coaches left promptly and got to Wembley and back with no issues. We also had 2 spare coaches available should any problems arise to ensure that everyone got there for Yeovil’s big day.

Robin Evans then presented the accounts which showed a turnover for the business of £160,435 for 2006/07. In total the business account had given YTFC £21,000 in one form or another during last season.

Membership Report

Steve Watts, Chairman of the membership committee, thanked the members for continuing to support and join the GWSC. We are always looking at new ways to improve our membership and had this year introduced a bigger and better discount directory. Steve then thanked the Bridport Glovers for their efforts. This official branch of the GWSC is now well established and growing in strength. Thank you to Tom Burt for all his efforts. We are looking to establish more branches in Devon, Dorset and Somerset and are currently developing one in Shepton Mallett.

Zoë Caswell reported that general membership numbers had been down last year, but the number of new supporters joining had been about the same. This season we introduced the shirt raffle for those joining early and numbers so far are on a par with last year’s total.

GWSC membership is still good value for money. For just £6 you receive a £2 discount on all GWSC away travel, 10% off in the GWSC shop, a 36 page directory of discounts and special offers and an exclusive badge which changes every season. We also have a family membership scheme for groups of 3 or more and all receive the same benefits as the single membership.

We are still looking to attract more members and are open to ideas and suggestions. We are currently looking to introduce a monthly membership draw.

Marilyn Cottle reported on the Junior Glovers membership scheme. We had close to 250 members aged 11 and under last season and they benefited from many discounts and special events. We held another successful Easter Egg Hunt with over 100 of the Junior Glovers attending. They got the chance to meet the players and have their photos taken. Not only that, but this year the players stayed for the whole event and got involved in games and skills out on the Astroturf including crossbar challenge, showboating, dribbling skills and even tennis. A disco and refreshments were also provided. Marilyn thanked Russell Slade and his team for their efforts and support.

The Junior Glovers costs just £16 and members get discounted travel, 10% off in the GWSC shop, a £5 gift voucher, signed Christmas card by the players, a free social event and the chance to buy a season ticket for £60 or match day tickets for £3! They also have the chance to be a mascot at an away game.

This year we have reintroduced the Young Glovers scheme for children aged 12-16 but this is not proving as popular, mainly because there is no offer from YTFC as with the Junior Glovers but we are hoping to work on this for next season. The Young Glovers membership also costs £16 and members receive the same offers from the GWSC as the Junior Glovers.

The membership accounts showed a turnover in 2006/07of £6,332 with around £500 being donated to YTFC.

Guest Speaker – Russell Slade

Russell started his speech by talking about the Boot Camp that the players went on pre-season saying that it was wake up call for many of them but proved very beneficial. He thanked the GWSC for paying for the event and presented a signed “Boot Camp 07” shirt to Paul in recognition of our sponsorship.

He also went on to thank the GWSC on behalf of Jim Joyce who appreciates the ice making machine that we provided for them.

He talked about it being a frustrating season for injuries, but more frustrating because the season is well under way and we have not been able to play our best team yet and play the formations we want. He spoke about their aim to get into the top 10 by Christmas as we have a good chance of staying up there and maybe doing better. He has a lot of belief in the players we have but still need to look for more. He had asked Darren Way what had changed since he left and he replied that the club were more professional now with the kit, food, equipment, etc. The GWSC have helped them achieve that. He also felt that the fans have got higher expectations though too. We are doing well but Russell is not happy with that, he wants to do better. He mentioned the offers from other clubs he had received but that he was not interested in the extra money; he is committed to achieving more here.

He spoke about how he wants to help get the centre of excellence up and running which will hopefully increase local interest and get more local people through the gates. He wants to get involved because he wants to see the youngsters coming through and playing for him one day.

The GWSC thanked Russell for everything he had done for the club and for coming tonight.

Presentation

Russell Slade accepted a cheque for £7,500 on behalf of the club from Tony Streetin.

Shirt Raffle

Russell Slade drew out the winning tickets in our members raffle. A total of 11 signed shirts awarded as prizes including an Arsenal shirt, 2 Yeovil shirts and the home any away shirts for the 4 players sponsored by the GWSC last season.

Election of Directors and Committee

Paul Hadlow was re-elected as a Director and Gayle Franklin as Company Secretary for the business.

Zoë Caswell and Tim Bourbon were re-elected to the Membership Committee.

Conclusion – Rich Rendell

It had been another successful season both on and off the pitch and we hope it continues for a few more years. We’ve got a club to be proud of and we need to get behind them through good times and bad. Don’t forget what we have achieved and where we’ve come from. It’s been achieved by following our motto, ‘achieve by unity’.

Great Performance and Victory For Ladies

Sundays match saw a great team performance from the girls, who matched QPR for pace, fitness and skill.

It was a long day, but the journey back was certainly worth it, with the Glovers grabbing their first three points of the season, and improving their profile for the rest of the season as newcomers to the league.

There were a few changes from last week’s team after last weeks 3–0 defeat against Bournemouth. Nicki Payne came in at left back to cover for the suspended Kia Bowles, and had a great game. Julie

Simkin also came back into the team after being away for the summer with injury and work commitments, playing in central midfield with Sarah Lawler, with Kayleigh Nardiello on the left and Stacey Pearson on the right.

Upfront changes came with the availability of last year’s league top scorer Jemma Tewkesbury, who although not scoring, worked hard and got herself into good positions to create pressure.

The first half was a hard battle as QPR held Yeovil to 0-0, and play was spread very evenly, with both teams having a couple of chances on goal. The Yeovil back four were solid and held their lines high to keep QPR from breaking through. Both teams battled end to end, but neither team were able to put the ball in the net.

The second half was like a different game for Yeovil, having re-organised at the break. On 55 minutes Alana Wilson broke through and netted the first Yeovil goal with a well placed strike into QPR’s net. This gave the Glovers more confidence, and Jemma Tewkesbury had a handful of chances but couldn’t beat the goalkeeper, despite her efforts to find the score sheet.

However, the Glovers were soon two up, and it was goal machine Alana Wilson again on target, with her second of the game.

The ball broke up the line with Nardiello, and was played to Wilson who passed a defender and amazingly lobbed the keeper –“Wayne Rooney style” to hit home. The team were ecstatic and had to keep their cool as there was still 17 minutes left to play in order to hold on to the three points.

The whole team sat in and defended superbly from front to back. Manager Steve Phelps made a few changes, bringing Emma Brazzel on the wing for Stacey Pearson, followed shortly after by Sarah Roxborough coming on for Jemma Tewkesbury, and finally adding Ellie Wolfe for Julie Simkin.

The game finished with Yeovil keeping good possession and dominating the game.

All in all it was a good performance. ‘ keeper Jodie Rice made a couple of good saves in the first half, the strikers were sharp, the midfield were compact, battling and creating, and the defence were solid.

Key performances came from Kayleigh Nardiello in the first half with her excellent recovery runs to team up with left back Nicola Payne, and the second half star performance came from double scoring forward, Alana Wilson.

Speaking after the match Captain Sarah Lawler was delighted with the win.

“This week we showed that we belong in this league and deserve to be playing at a higher standard,” she said.

“I don’t think many teams would have put their money on us returning with three points and a clean sheet against QPR, and I think that now a few of our opponents will sit up and take note.

“Our next game will be away at title favourites Plymouth Argyle, who will be a handful after giving Frome Town a 9–1 battering last week.

“Despite the fact that they are favourites for the title, I think we have a really good chance against them, with confidence high and the squad gelling well after Sundays match.”

Report by Sarah Lawler

Ladies Record Superb Victory!

The Yeovil Town ladies this afternoon travelled up to London and recorded a famous victory, beating Queens Park Rangers Ladies 2-0.

Striker Alana Wilson grabbed both goals for the Glovers in what was a brilliant display from the whole team.

Further details tomorrow.

Saturday 1st September 2007

Glovers Robbed By The Ref!!

The Glovers were this afternoon the victims of an appalling refereeing decision as the official Mr Lee awarded a free kick to Tranmere after the only thing that brought Chris Greenacre down just outside the box, in the dying moments of the game, was thin air!

Steve Davies converted the free kick, and the game controversially ended 1-1.

Stewie had previously given the Glovers the lead with a thunderbolt of a shot from 25 yards on 57 minutes in a game that the Glovers should have won.

Ladies Lose Out Against Cherries

The Yeovil Town Ladies went down 3-0 to AFC Bournemouth on Sunday in the opening game of their league campaign.

Played in very hot conditions, the scoreline rather flattered the Cherries, especially taking into account the fact the Glovers had what looked a cast iron penalty turned down, where there goalkeeper should also have been sent off, plus had a goal disallowed that even the opposition bench thought had gone over the line.

Speaking to the Green and White supporters Club this afternoon, Yeovil Captain Sarah Lawler felt that despite the defeat, her team are still more than capable of doing well this season:

“Sunday was a tough battle against a very

"It was a harsh reflection on the match"

organised team.” She said.

“Bournemouth played some quick and physical football, which is what you would expect after a year in the South West Combination League. Although it may take us a few games to adjust to this pace, I know that with the squad we have, we are capable to rise to the new challenge a head of us to compete in this league.

“I think the heat got to us a little and that by the end of the game we were very tired. I look forward to playing them again when our squad is complete and we have had some time to settle in, giving us a result which will be a better reflection of the football we can play.

“I do think that 3-0 was a harsh reflection on the match as we gave them a good game and we were very unlucky to have a goal disallowed, which I think would of changed the match in our favour.

“On the positive side we showed we can create chances, but credit must go to the very capable Bournemouth goal keeper who saved three off the line.

Next week’s game is against QPR away which will be a tough match. However, I am looking forward to the challenge and to the opportunity to play up at the QPR ground.”

It was a good birthing for the Yeovil girls, and they will have learned a lot from the experience. They will come back stronger, especially next week when Jemma Tewkesbury, Julie Simkin and Nicki Payne will all be available again after missing out this weekend.

Robin Evans’ full match report and pictures from the game taken by Paul A’Barroiw will appear here towards the end of the week.

Bridport Glovers Thank Sponsors

The Bridport Glovers will again be running their mini bus(es) to as many away matches as possible this season. They are also pleased to announce that Kenny Townsend of KAL Marquees (Bridport) sponsored our trips to Huddersfield and Northampton.

Speaking to us this afternoon Tom Burt spoke of his gratitude:

“I’d like to thank Kenny Townsend of KAL Marquees for making these trips possible for us,” he said. “Without the help of our kind sponsors we would not be able to run as many away trips as we do. This donation was very much appreciated.

“We are hoping to run a 53 seater coach to Leeds on 6th October. Anyone interested for this trip or joining the Bridport Glovers should please contact Tom Burt on 01308 456145

Ladies Back In Action On Sunday!

The Yeovil Town Ladies team kick off their league season tomorrow as they take on AFC Bournemouth Ladies in their first match back in the South West Combination Women’s Football League.

Back in the third tier of Ladies’ football, the Glovers will be hoping to get off to a winning start as they aim for promotion to the National League this coming season.

However, they will have to do so tomorrow without the services of the injured Sophie Currie and Danny Pearson, as well as last season’s top scorer Jemma Tewkesbury, midfielder Julie Simkin and defender Nicki Payne who are unavailable.

Manager Steve Phelps will still put out a strong side which will go all out for the three points.

The match kicks off at the Somerton Sports Ground, Gassons Lane, Somerton TA11 6HG at 2.00pm, with all supporters welcome to come along and watch. A little point of note – The bar is open after the game!

Stat Attack!

Lloyd Owusu grabbed a dramatic injury time winner for Yeovil Town this afternoon at Sixfields, as the Glovers moved up to sixth in the table, after a good 2-1 win over Northampton Town.

Justin Cochrane initially gave Yeovil the lead on 25 minutes, but the home side came back to equalise six minutes later through Poul Hubertz, before Owusu sent the Yeovil support into raptures with his late winner.
